Shoogar Combo started as Shoo Blak. This band had a couple of albums including Lelenne Cherie which later will be one of the greatest hits of Shoogar Combo.
The group included several group of musicians over the years, however the main member and leader of the group was guitarist maestro Adrien Dupuy, Yves Joseph Romain on tenor sax and impresario Gerard Chery. The band started as Shoogar Combo in 1979 releasing 'Ca Ou Ko We' and 'Crache Dife' under Fred Paul's Mini Record Label. The original members included besides Dupuy and Romain, band leader and bassist Jean-Baptiste Pierre aka BABA, singers Jean Claude Paul aka Blageur, Gracia Jean-Phillipe aka Tikit and Musset Dascy; guitarist Roosevelt Chatelier, pianist Lucien Bastien, Rulhieres Celestin aka Gueguel on tom & cowbel, Leon Beauvais on congas, drummer Jean Claude Jules, Wilhem Colas on alto sax and Louis Bonhomme and Gracia Pierre on trumpet and trombone.
During the 1980's, the group perfected its own konpa style, a heavy variation of Nemours' compas direct called 'konpa Malouk'. Important members joined the group progressively as some original members left. With the arrival of star singer Joseph Dieudonne Larose, guitarist Jacky Ambroise, bassist Gertho Arnault, Nestague Antoine on cowbell, Lesly Augustin on congas, and vocalist Max Letang; Shoogar Combo became even more popular. The band's main composer genius like Adrien Dupuy, Yves Romain etc contributed greatly to making several hits among them: 'Demele W', 'Caresse M Anba', 'Manman Pinbeche', 'Matinett' and some memorable kanaval songs like 'Pigeon' and 'Pinceau' in 1984. Other members of this period were: pianist Johnson Jean Phillipe, trombonist Ronald Nelson, Walter Geneus on trumpet, Jean Claude Joseph on sax alto, with background vocal by Yonel Isaac.
At some point, Jean Yves Romain created the band Tam Tam Malouk, and released an album featuring singers Larose and Max Letang.
